Snowfall in Uttarakhand Declines by 90% After Eight Years

Dehradun, Deepak Purohit: Uttarakhand and the Himalayas are experiencing a severe cold wave this year, with temperatures dropping to -2°C to -5°C, freezing streams and rivers. Surprisingly, snowfall has decreased by 90%, a first in eight years, according to Dr. Rohit Thapliyal from the Uttarakhand Meteorological Department.

The primary reason for this sharp decline is the weakened activity of Western Disturbances. Typically, from November to January, rainfall and snowfall in the Himalayas rely heavily on these disturbances. However, this year, such conditions have developed only twice, leaving the higher Himalayan ranges, usually blanketed in thick snow by December, largely barren.

A Repeat of History

For the first time since 2016, snowfall in the higher Himalayas has been limited to just about one inch between November and mid-December. Back then, the weather pattern had also left meteorologists puzzled. This year, the icy winds from the mountains have swept through the Shivalik foothills and plains, bringing nighttime temperatures down to 4°C-5°C. These unusual conditions could adversely affect daily life and agriculture in the region.

Change in Weather Expected by December 28

Relief may be imminent as weather experts anticipate a shift beginning December 28 with an active Western Disturbance, likely bringing rain and snow for three days. This could finally cover the mountains in snow by New Year and may also warm temperatures.

What Are Western Disturbances?

Western Disturbances are weather systems from the Mediterranean and Atlantic that bring cold, moist winds to northwestern India in winter. When they interact with the Himalayas, they cause rain and snow, affecting winter precipitation levels. While beneficial for crops, weak disturbances can lead to dry spells, raising concerns for water resources and agriculture.
