India’s Highest Police Station to Open Near Indo-China Border at Jyolingkong

Dehradun. In a historic move, Uttarakhand government has announced the establishment of India’s highest police station at Jyolingkong, located at an altitude of 14,500 feet near the Indo-China border in Adi Kailash. This decision comes in response to the increasing number of pilgrims and tourists visiting the sacred Adi Kailash region in Pithoragarh district in Uttarakhand.

ADG Administration Amit Sinha, during his inspection of the Gunji police station situated at 10,500 feet, has approved the setting up of the new police station at Jyolingkong. Recognizing the need for enhanced security measures due to rising tourism activities, he emphasized the necessity for new police outposts in the area. Hence, an extension of the Gunji police station will be established at Jyolingkong. Sinha has instructed police personnel to maintain vigilant coordination with various security agencies including the Army, SSB, ITBP, IB, Special Bureau, and LIU to ensure robust border security.

Gunji village, located near the China border in Pithoragarh district, has been home to India’s highest police station until now. However, the new police station at Jyolingkong, 12 km ahead of Gunji, will soon hold this distinction. Police personnel are stationed here for only six months of the year, as the area gets completely covered in snow after October. Jyolingkong also offers a view of the sacred Adi Kailash peak, which saw a visit from Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year.

Record-Breaking Pilgrim Numbers at Adi Kailash

This year has witnessed record-breaking numbers of pilgrims visiting Adi Kailash. By June 1, over 20,000 devotees had undertaken the journey, surpassing all previous records. Before 2019, the pilgrimage was a challenging trek due to the lack of motorable roads. The surge in pilgrim numbers has highlighted the need for enhanced security, disaster management, and organizational measures in the region, leading to the decision to establish new police stations.
