Uttarakhand Historic Step: Enacts Uniform Civil Code, First Indian State

Dehradun: The Uttarakhand government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, has officially implemented the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on Wednesday. This significant decision marks Uttarakhand as the pioneering state in India to embrace the UCC, a momentous development within the nation’s legal framework. This new law requires registration of live-in relationships in Uttarakhand. Under UCC, kids from live-in relationships are legitimized, abandoned women get maintenance. Not registering live-ins could mean 6 months jail. Women have rights to divorce abusive spouses.

Additionally, the law prohibits practices like polygamy and ‘halala,’ common in some communities, while exempting tribal traditions from its application. This initiative has sparked interest from other BJP-ruled states such as Gujarat and Assam, hinting at a possible nationwide impact.

To facilitate effective implementation, a nine-member committee, headed by a former chief secretary, has been tasked with developing operational guidelines and appointing competent authorities. Chief Minister Dhami has stressed that the UCC will advance equality in marriage, inheritance, and divorce, underscoring its commitment to a just and uniform legal system for all individuals.
